“Incredibly intense, pure and perfectly constructed with extravagant nuances of fruit and richness, the wines of Chateau Pichon Baron have been beautifully crafted under the direction of Christian Seeley.”

The original vineyard was established in the 17th century by Jacques de Pichon, Baron de Longueville. Divided in two in 1850, the vineyard was partly owned by Raoul de Pichon-Longueville (the other becoming Pichon Comtesse), who had the present château built there. Inspired by that of Azay-le-Rideau, the building contrasts with the horizontal lines of the winery built after the estate was bought by Axa Millésimes in 1987. The insurer undertook major renovation work there, under the leadership of Jean-Michel Cazes, then Christian Seely, with Jean-René Matignon as technical director. Since 2001, the selection policy has been intensified: only 40 ha out of the 73 hectares of this exceptional terroir, made up of beautiful Garonne gravel, is now used for the great wine, and is an immediate neighbour of Latour.

The 73 hectares of the Pichon Baron estate are spread over very high quality gravelly soils. This singular soil, low in nutrients and without excess water, sparingly nourishes the different varieties of vine stocks. The great terroir of the butte de Pichon Baron, the historic parcel of land of the estate, already in production when the cru was created in 1694, is solely devoted to the production of the Grand Vin and today represents the major part of its blend.

The vines, with an average age of 35 years, are hand-picked. Vinification and maturing are traditional. The wines are aged for 20 months in mostly new French oak barrels.
