Grand Cru Classé de Graves – Pessac-Léognan

“A true jewel of the Magrez empire, this lord of Pessac-Léognan is distinguished by its exceptional concentration, combined with a fine and supple texture. »
The Wine Advocate

Brilliant ruby red colour, expressive and complex nose, frank and suave attack, this Grand Cru Classé de Graves has nothing of an ancestor although it is one of the oldest Grand Crus of Bordeaux.

History

Château Pape Clément is one of the oldest Grands Crus of Bordeaux. Its vineyard was planted in the 13th century by Bertrand de Goth, the youngest member of a noble family from the Bordeaux region. Archbishop of Bordeaux, Bertrand de Goth became Pope in 1305, under the name of Clément V. The Château takes its name from him. The vineyard then belonged to the Archbishopric of Bordeaux until the French Revolution. This estate can be proud to have produced wine on the same land for nearly seven centuries.

Terroir

Located in Pessac, a few kilometres from Bordeaux, the 63 ha vineyard stretches over a mixture of gravelly-sandy and clayey-limestone soils on an iron-rich limestone subsoil. Reconciling a wealth of traditions and state-of-the-art techniques, the wines of Château Pape Clément are produced under the sign of the highest standards. Thanks to hard work, constant questioning, the alliance of tradition (notably with the use of bovine animal traction) and innovation (use of a drone to monitor the evolution of the vine) and a remarkable terroir, the estate produces exceptional wines in both colours.

Vinification

The vines, with an average age of 30 years, are hand-picked. Vinification and maturing are traditional. The wines are aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels.
