“This second classified growth now reaches the level of the best.”
La Revue du Vin de France
Until the 19th century, the Léoville estate was one of the largest and oldest vintages in the Médoc. It stretched from the Château Beychevelle vineyard to Château Latour in Pauillac. It was divided into three parts: Léoville Poyferré, Léoville Barton and Léoville Las Cases.
Dense and supple, nice harmonious mid-palate, nice texture, round finish.

Origin
The origin of the estate dates back to 1638. At the time, Léoville was the largest property in the Médoc, fragmented over time and generations. Léoville Poyferré will initiate the legend of this great wine in 1840 and will be consecrated fifteen years later Second Grand Cru Classé. Didier Cuvelier will preside over the destinies of this jewel from 1979.
Terroir
Château Léoville Poyferré, Second Cru of Saint-Julien classified in 1855, produces its first wine from 80 hectares of gravel composed of pebbles and gravel cemented by clay sands. The vines, deeply rooted to draw on the rich intimate of the terroir, are divided between 4 grape varieties for a final blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon followed by around a quarter of Merlot, 5 to 10% Petit Verdot and traces of Cabernet Franc.
Vinification
Since 1995, winemaking has evolved under the leadership of oenologist Michel Rolland. Extraction is greater thanks to more frequent pumping over during fermentation. Since 2010, new tapered stainless steel tanks have gradually replaced the old winery. Malolactic fermentation takes place in new barrels for free-run wine and in vats for press wine. At the end of the malolactic fermentation, the wine stays for around 20 months in new oak barrels which are renewed on average at 80% each year.
