5ème Grand Cru Classé – Pauillac

“It is a refined and silky wine, a lace Pauillac.”
La Revue du Vin de France

Château Haut-Bages Libéral shares the same owner as Château Gruaud-Larose, Château Ferrière, Château Chasse-Spleen and Château Citran. It is one of those great little-known wines that deserve to be discovered.

History

From the beginning of the 18th century, the Liberal family governed the estate. Brokers from father to son, at the time they sold most of the harvest in the Netherlands and Belgium. Over time, they bring together the best Pauillac terroirs. This is how this fifth classified growth in 1855 now owns half of its vineyard attached to that of Château Latour and against the Gironde, and the other half behind Château Pichon-Longueville.

In 1960, the Cruse family, then owner of Château Pontet-Canet, another fifth classified growth in Pauillac, acquired the property. The Cruse will then launch a vast program of replanting the vines.

The Merlaut-Villars family, in 1983, took over the estate. Claire Villars now runs the property. The name of Château Haut-Bages Liberal has two origins. The first is geographic: half of the property's vineyard is located on the heights of the locality "Bages", a large plateau south of Pauillac, overlooking the Gironde estuary. The second is patronymic: it is the first known owners, the Liberals, who added their name to the topographical designation.

Terroir

Haut-Bages Libéral benefits from an excellent terroir as evidenced by its prestigious and immediate neighbors, Latour and Pichon. He also benefits from the advice of Alain Sutre for viticulture and Eric Boissenot, famous oenologist of the Médoc.

Vinification and aging

After manual harvesting, sorting and maceration, the vinification is carried out in thermo-regulated stainless steel vats. Aging takes place for 12 to 18 months in oak barrels (40% new).
