4ème Grand Cru Classé – Pauillac

“Lafite Rothschild’s little brother enjoys the full attention of Eric Kohler and his team. With a beautiful gravel terroir, located in the heart of Pauillac, it has long suffered from the young age of the vines. Over the years, the wine is now well established. Producing serious, classic and very dense wines which age wonderfully, Duhart is a sure bet in Pauillac.”

History

From the beginning of the 18th century, under the leadership of the Seigneurie de Lafite, the town of Pauillac was covered with vines. The wines of Milon are used as income for the Lord of Lafite and are included in the “second wines” of Château Lafite, which already testifies to the recognized quality of the terroir. The owner of Lafite was then the Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, qualified by Louis XV as “Prince of the vines”. The quality of the Château's wines fell considerably until the Rothschild family bought the property in 1962. At the dawn of the 21st century, the maturity of the plantations and the renovation of the cellars brought the final touches to the considerable qualitative effort. which has been driven for 40 years to restore Château Duhart-Milon to its 4th classified growth in Médoc.

Terroir

The Château Duhart-Milon vineyard stretches almost one block on the west side of Château Lafite Rothschild, on the Milon hill which extends the Carruades de Lafite plateau. The property of Château Duhart-Milon includes 76 ha of vines. The soils are fine gravel mixed with aeolian sands on a tertiary limestone subsoil.

Vinification and aging

Each plot is first isolated to assess its capacity to enter the great wine or not after the end of fermentation. Each vintage ages in oak barrels. The barrels come entirely from the Tonnellerie des Domaines. The duration of aging in barrels varies depending on the vintage from 10 to 18 months.
