History

In 1791, on the death of his father, Louis Joseph Gaspard Lacoste de Maniban, Marquis d'Estournel, inherited at the age of 29 the family property located in the southern part of Saint-Estèphe, at a place called Cos, original word Gascon meaning "hill of pebbles". A man of passion, he devoted his life to it, not hesitating to defy conventions to improve his wines. The success was dazzling, allowing it distant exports, in particular to India, attracting it the nickname of "Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe". In 1830, to celebrate his success, he surmounted his cellars with Chinese pagodas, which were to become the exotic image of Cos, and had a 17th century door from a Zanzibar palace. The Reybier family, now owners, perpetuates this taste for innovation, in particular with the installation in 2008 of the very first gravity-fed Bordeaux cellar, in such a way that, from the reception of the harvest to the bottling, the entire process takes place. takes place without the slightest pomp!

Terroir

Cos in Gascon means hill of pebbles. Cos d´Estournel is therefore placed on a pile of gravels mixed with limestone clays. This excess of gravel, specific to Cos, therefore forces the vine to dig its roots deeper in order to draw its needs from the soil. Making the vines suffer gives great wines and Cos does very well. The grape variety is 60% cabernet-sauvignon, 40% merlot, a few percent of cabernet-franc. The vines, spread over about thirty plots and with an average age of 35 years, are planted in high density at 9,000 vines / ha.

Vinification and aging

The average age of the vines maintained at 35 years and the high planting density (8,000 to 10,000 vines / ha) contribute to controlling yields and the high quality of the grapes. Each winegrower has total responsibility for 45,000 vines, of which he assumes, for the most part manually, all the care. Grass is used on almost the entire vineyard. After a demanding sorting, the vinification is carried out on a plot basis in the new gravity cellar using 72 thermo-regulated stainless steel vats from 19 to 155 hl. All operations are carried out without any pumping and by gravity using 4 100 hl lift tanks. The 12-month aging is carried out in stave oak barrels (40 to 50% new).
